Moss removal: how to stop moss coming back

Published on 10 June 2026

Cleaning is good. Making sure the moss does not come back too quickly is better. Here is how to make a clean result last.

Why moss comes back

Three factors encourage its return: damp (it is Belgium, after all), shade (trees, walls, north-facing orientation) and the porosity of the surface, which holds water and spores. Near the Sonian Forest or under tall trees, the effect is even stronger.

Treating at the root with a moss treatment

Cleaning that only removes the visible moss leaves the spores in place. A moss treatment applied beforehand kills the micro-organisms deep down — the first key to a result that lasts.

Protecting with a water repellent

On porous surfaces, a water-repellent treatment once dry reduces water absorption and markedly slows green deposits reappearing. It is the most cost-effective investment for cleaning less often.

Good maintenance habits

  • regularly remove dead leaves and debris that hold moisture;
  • trim plants that cast shade and drip onto the patio;
  • help water drain away (no standing water);
  • plan annual maintenance in spring rather than a big clean every five years.
